Child Safety and Parental Consent

Child safety and compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), GDPR-K, and Google Play Families Policies are foundational to Knowlina:

• Parental Authorization: Children cannot independently register for an account. All child profiles must be created, authorized, and linked to a verified parent or legal guardian account.
• Affirmative Consent: By setting up a child profile, parents grant explicit consent for educational progress tracking and parental safety features.
• No Social Profiling: Children have no public profile and cannot interact with unknown external parties.
• Zero Advertising: We never serve targeted commercial or behavioral ads to children.
• Parental Rights: Parents may review, modify, or permanently delete child data at any time.

Information We Collect

We collect only the information necessary to provide educational and safety services:

• Account Data: Parent name, email address, phone number, and encrypted credentials.
• Child Profile: Child name/nickname, avatar image, age, and assigned grade/educational levels.
• Educational Progress: Completed learning missions, quizzes, stars, coins, and achievement badges.
• Device Information: Device model, operating system version, and anonymous performance logs.
• Location Data: Geographic GPS coordinates collected for parental tracking.

Background Location Access

Knowlina accesses the ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION permission on child devices under the following strict conditions:

• What is collected: Precise device GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude, timestamp).
• When it is collected: Even when the app is closed or not in active use, provided the user has granted permission.
• Why it is collected: To allow parents and legal guardians to see their child’s live location on the Parent Dashboard, ensuring child safety and peace of mind when travelling to school or outdoors.
• Prominent Disclosure: Before requesting system permission, a dedicated full-screen disclosure is presented explaining why background location is needed. Permission is requested only after the user taps 'Agree'.
• Sharing: Location data is encrypted and strictly shared only with the linked parent account. It is NEVER sold, shared with third-party advertisers, or used for commercial tracking.

Third-Party Service Providers

We do not sell personal data. We partner only with trusted service providers to run app infrastructure:

• Google Firebase: Infrastructure and push notifications via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM).
• Google Sign-In: Optional secure OAuth authentication for parents.
• RevenueCat: Mobile subscription and in-app purchase validation.
• Google Play Billing: In-app purchase and subscription transactions on Android.
• Airwallex: Secure payment gateway processing for subscription tiers.
• OpenStreetMap / Nominatim: Geocoding street names for parent tracking.

Data Security

All data transmissions between the Knowlina app and our backend servers are secured using TLS/HTTPS encryption. Sensitive data is stored in secure, access-controlled databases protected by modern firewalls and authentication safeguards.

Data Retention and Deletion

We retain personal data only for as long as your account remains active.

• In-App Deletion: Parents can permanently delete their account and all associated child data at any time inside the app by going to Profile > Account > Delete Account.
• Immediate Purge: Account deletion permanently and irrevocably removes all parent credentials, child profiles, and location logs from our active production systems.
• Email Requests: You can also request complete data deletion by emailing privacy@knowlina.com.
